We continued ‘Weaving Community Networks for Diabetes’ with great success in Quito.

Last week, the TERECO-Creación project made significant progress with two important workshops focused on co-creating community strategies for managing type 2 diabetes. Building on the results from previous relational flowchart workshops conducted in Reino de Quito and Renovación Dorada, last week’s sessions introduced findings using the metaphor of a tree: the roots represented the causes, the trunk the central problem, and the branches the consequences.

In these new “Problem Tree and Solution Co-creation” workshops, held on Monday, July 15, at the Renovación Dorada patient club in the Magdalena neighborhood, and Wednesday, July 17, at the Reino de Quito neighborhood center, participants reflected on ideal situations opposite to the problems represented in the tree. They discussed actions the community could take to achieve these ideal scenarios and ways to strengthen the social support network in managing type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

The tree format—roots for causes, the trunk for the core issue, and branches for consequences—allowed participants to visualize the problem’s various dimensions and potential solutions in a clear and structured way. This approach not only enhances understanding but also fosters collaboration and community-driven action.

These workshops are vital for developing effective and sustainable strategies, strengthening social support networks, and improving the quality of life for individuals with type 2 diabetes in Quito. The insights and reflections from these sessions will continue to guide the next phases of the TERECO-Creación project.
