One of the next steps after conducting and obtaining the results of the Population Survey carried out in the different parishes of southern Quito was the implementation of the process of socialisation and return of results. Between March and July 2022, different community workshops were held in the Eloy Alfaro area, in which a variety of participatory tools, including social theatre, were used to effectively address the prevention and management of DM2 and associated risk factors.
Collective reflection on the various social, cultural and economic factors that influence the prevalence of diabetes and associated risks in resource-limited settings was encouraged, and workshop participants were made aware of the importance of social support in chronic disease care.
Our intention is to contribute to strengthening the quality of life in neighbourhoods by promoting the adoption of local strategies and policies tailored to the needs of each community.
During these workshops, the results of the Population Survey were socialised and different health assets in the community were identified. This involved the active participation of community leaders, local authorities and citizens in identifying both resources and solutions.
Community participation activities in these workshops included:
- Community socialisation: which have allowed direct interaction between researchers, community leaders and members of the population. They are spaces to inform, raise awareness about DM2, address social challenges and contribute to the public debate on health in the community.
- Health asset mapping: Through active community collaboration, the health assets available in each parish were identified and mapped. This process has highlighted existing resources and solutions, as well as identified areas for improvement to promote healthy living in the community.
- Socialisation of results: The dissemination of the results of the CEAD Project has been carried out in a broad and accessible manner, using various media and communication channels. From the presentation of results in these community workshops to the preparation of reports, the aim has been to promote debate and reflection on DM2 in society.
This ‘Socialisation of information’ process was carried out in Eloy Alfaro as an integral part of the CEAD Project, which extends to different areas of Quito and Esmeraldas. This diversified approach reflects the project’s commitment to address DM2 in diverse contexts, adapting strategies to the specific needs of each community. The socialisation of information in Eloy Alfaro exemplifies the importance of community participation, knowledge sharing and political commitment in the prevention and management of DM2.
We thank all participants, representatives of the municipality of Quito, the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador, and the Colectivo Teatral El Derrumbe for their participation.
